I am learning so much
I found the exercise incredibly insightful, for a few days I was seeing everyone’s faces as skulls! And I also started to observe how the muscles move the skin over the bones… a bit obsessive I guess but I am learning. Doing this exercise did change my perception and understanding in a deep way. It is one thing to draw an oval and divide it in the proportions of the face and put features into place, but to comprehend the skull underneath, to see where the external features actually “sit” and move from was deeply enlightening.

I started drawing at the age of 2. That was many decades ago and although I’ve always loved drawing I didn’t keep up with improving my skills.
I wanted to do something for my son and thought he’d like a portrait of his beloved dog. I was so pleased with the results (considering I had not drawn in many years) that I decided this was the right time to start again. Fortunately, I discovered the Drawing Academy and joined. I really look forward to seeing my work and skills improve.

My art story
I have been drawing and painting for many years, but my work was based on copying from photos. I always knew that it should be a better way to create my own art, yet my drawing skills were not good enough to draw from life or imagination. So, I decided that I have to find the right art course where I could learn how to draw anything I want.
When I found the Drawing Academy I was pleasantly surprised by its quality and low cost. It offers so much, including a lifetime membership and personal support by tutors…

I love silver-point. I have been a Drawing Academy student for over a year and learned different drawing techniques and media.
I found the silver-point medium to be a great medium for my drawings.
Thank you very much.

First commission portrait
My first official request by a colleague, who wanted me to do a portrait of her dog, Bonnie, who is passed.
It was a very challenging piece as I had no idea how to render white fur in shadow.

Artwork by Ann Fitzpatrick, Drawing Academy student
I have attached two sketches prior to doing an oil painting for my husbands birthday.
The story behind the painting is a legend about Cape Point or the Cape of Storms, as it was often called many years ago. Sometime towards the end of the 17th century, a Dutch ships captain refused to listen to the advise given to him not to take his ship out to sail around the point as a storm was about to hit the peninsular. He refused to listen and sailed from Cape Town to round the point. The weather did turn and he was unable to get around the point loosing his ship and all on board were drowned. The captain was condemned for eternity to keep trying to get his ship around the point. Fanciful sailors have claimed to have seen the ship through the fog in stormy conditions…
