Portrait by Christopher Slagle, Drawing Academy student
Struggling (to be an) Artist
Since my early childhood I have enjoyed creating artwork as mostly a hobby, to sooth my mind. Around three to four years ago, I decided to give artwork a more prominent place in my life. I could not afford to go to art school so when I came across the Drawing Academy I was more than excite. I found so much technical information, things I didn’t know, that I could add to my artistic proclivities. My artwork started to progress immediately.
Shortly after starting this course my partner of 26 years passed away suddenly and I didn’t visit this site again for several years. I have started to find my drive again and I am so happy that I still have access to this course.
In the past year I have taken on the responsibility of caring for five children belonging to a friend, ages newborn to 10 years old, to keep them from being separated into the foster care system. I have so little time for artwork but am trying to give it at least 15 minutes a day. I have found that their young creativity is calling for me to share knowledge with them and this course is a great beginning for these children to learn to draw. Teaching them is a newfound reason to get back to this site, and to regain my own focus and passion.
“Weathered” is the title of this pastel portrait of a sitting model. It was done shortly after studying the portrait portion of this course.

Thank you Jean.
Wow! Beautiful! You are a great person and artist! Keep working!!!
I appreciate you comment Anuta. I am looking for a place to set up a studio now and will hopefully have one in the coming weeks.
This is such an inspiring story….mirroring my own in so many ways. Is there any way to contact this artist?
Jackie.
Thank you Jackie. Although artists having struggle is nothing new, it does help when people make you feel less alone by sharing their own experiences.
Very impressive.
Thank you Betsy.
