I want thank the Drawing Academy and the other students. It inspires me to work harder and to try and get better all the time. I will admit it does get frustrating because my skill level limits what I see in my mind’s eye. I have been focusing on portraits of the human face because this seems to be the most difficult…

Reintroducing the Silverpoint Technique-

Reintroducing the Silverpoint Technique

Article by Vladimir London, Drawing Academy tutor

Russian artist Victor Koulbak

Victor Koulbak is best known for reintroducing the technique of silverpoint to the art world. This drawing technique takes its origin in the Renaissance time and now is almost forgotten.

Victor was the second-born child in his family. He was born on March the 12th, 1946 in Moscow, Russia. While his father was employed as a pilot in the Russian military, his mother was content to stay home and raise their children. It was Victor’s mother who first took notice of his capacity in regards to drawing, and she who brought him to the Academy of Fine Arts located in Moscow; here Victor was employed at study for the full four years. He later recalled those years with fondness: “There, we were taught the arts. The method of teaching used was most classic. We were held strictly to only one standard – accuracy. I liked it, and I was happy.”

“On a regular basis, the choicest work was posted in one window on the street. On the first occasion that my work was posted, I was very proud, and brought my mother and sister to see it. They were pleased with my success. They were outraged however, when on another occasion we found that the window had been broken and the singular posted item- mine- was stolen. It was for me though, my first of accomplishments.”…

Window to the world

Artwork by Sophie H

Hi, I’m 14 and only recently got myself a sketchbook and am beginning to fill it. I’ve never had any art lessons/courses outside of school art class so I never really got to learn the basics or any drawing techniques.

My target for art has always been realism. I would love to one day be able to draw realistically. I also want to be able to create art without having to look up references all the time on my laptop…

Points in the art

Artwork by Clifford Honoridez

I’m a newbie artist. I started drawing less than 2 years ago. Now, I’m studying fine arts in college.

Fine artist is the only profession that I can think of. My school isn’t enough to make me a great artist. Watching the videos after my class will help me maximize my time to practice my skills.

Drawing Academy is great online learning center for artist; instructors are hands-on to the students.

I think it will make me one of the best of our class from one of the worst.

Please vote for me because I need to learn more in arts from these great instructors….

Wolf on the prowl

Artwork by D Shah

I’m a 24 year old self taught artist. I’m interested in art history and learning fine arts is the one thing I always wanted to do. Art has helped me calm down and put my thoughts to paper. I good way to express myself. I have difficulty focusing and drawing has taught me patience.

This would be the first time I’d be trying out online classes. I’m excited to learn from Drawing Academy.

I want to learn to draw and to express myself better. I want to show people how I think and feel…

How to get good drawing skills fast

How to get good drawing skills fast

Question from Vlad Baloc

I am currently practicing for a entrance exam at a design school.

The exam consists of the following:
-three 15-minute sketches of a human model (on 3 different A3 papers)
-three 15-minute sketches of objects, four 20-minutes sketches of objects and 1 insect from memory
-two 1-hour color drawings of a given idea (Last year it was rock and jazz music)
-Two days later comes a 6-hour project sketch and a interview with a map presentation a day after that.
The exam is in September and I feel that my art is not improving fast enough to pass.

My question is, do you think your course can help me with this exam? I ask since I am unsure of exactly where to commit my time. My art tutor is only telling me that I have to draw eight hours a day, and at this point it is impossible for me. I do my best to draw six hours a day…

Woman with serious green eyes

Artwork by Brighita Weinberg

My name is Brighita Weinberg, I am 67 year old. I was a professional woman, now am retired. All my life I liked drawing and was fascinated with the works of art. Especially I enjoyed oil paintings of the old masters, their techniques and the way they connect to the viewer.

Most of my training is self taught, and now I am participating in more formal education .I am also using the internet as a source for my training.
The submitted painting is related the picture of my niece that is a solger in the Israeli army. Her gaze and determination attracted me to paint this picture.

I do believe that more formal training in the Drawing Academy will help me to advance in this field, and fulfill my dream to become an artist…

How to get Proficient Drawing Skills

How to get Proficient Drawing Skills

Question from Janice S. Axt

I would like to sign up for your lessons; I will be 77 years old when I do so! I have for the past 4 years tried to master the tapered stroke with “5 pencils” through 2 broken arms at different times and have not progressed!

I desperately want to succeed in drawing. I turned back to it as the basics for successively painting and I have many examples in my library of the great masters, but how in the world can the way you are talking about teaching, teach in 3 months? What you describe sounds like an art atelier, and can I produce that in my apartment? Do I require casts, an easel of a certain size, silverpoint tools, in addition to the cost of the lessons? Even at 77, two years older than the student you mentioned, I still want to accomplish what I dreamed of doing at age 8! …

Question on Photorealism

Question on Photorealism

Question from Carl

There is a question, but first the comment. I look forward to my Drawing magazine when it comes. The Spring 2015 issue features the winners of the Shades of Gray contest. The winners were almost exclusively photorealists.

I really don’t understand this exercise and the message that is being sent. On one hand, the magazine includes an article on “Beauty Through Leonardo’s Eyes” and two examples of “Head of a Young Woman.” Looking at these drawings you can awe at the use of line, hatching and appreciation the artist has for his subject. As Vladimir said in a recent post, you instantly recognize the artist. You can imagine him drawing the subject and the appreciation of beauty through his eyes….
