Drawing in Silverpoint

Artwork by Carl, Drawing Academy student

I was inspired by the Victor Koulbak art article.

Here is my latest entry of a Pietro Annigoni painting, “Modella en Posa.” I hope you like it.

Some tips. Lay the ground with many coats so you can scratch off the silverpoint like an eraser without cutting into paper. Use old silver spoons, jewelry, earrings. Better silver than store bought stylus. You can layout drawing in charcoal or pencil and highlight in white chalk. Masters did it in charcoal before laying down the silverpoint…

The yatch girl

Artwork by Pabu

Hello,

I am Pabu and I see some drawings looking real as if its breathing and has life. Those kinds of drawings were my inspiration. Starting to learn and every time I draw even a simple one it teaches many things.

One should be able to draw what he thinks and Drawing Academy is one such which guides artists in that direction.

I really like to draw life like drawings and to draw what i think and this course will really help me out a lot…

Art is my passion

Artwork by Brian Chest

Well of course my name is Brian and art is my passion. Its been a gateway for me to leave all the messy situations I’ve been in and escape away in my own mind. I wasn’t like much by my peers or family and was considered to be an outcast often because of how I acted or the way I dressed and such. I could never figure out the answer to change any of those things. It would often hurt my heart that I had to change who I was for people to accept me (even my family). But when I was around 5 or 6 I discovered a passion for sketching, recreating, and designing different things. By the time I reached middle school I was drawing on t-shirts and sketching fake tattoos on random kids. High school I developed my skill and improved. Current day now that I’m 21 I love drawing. Sometimes id do tattoos or paint but nothing was more better then Wilding a pencil and creating whatever came to mind on that paper…

Dreaming In Art

Dreaming In Art

Artwork by Atiba Kojo

My story is not that much different than many other people in this art competition. I am an older person returning to art after not drawing very much for many years. I did not take an art class when I was in high school, I always sort of knew that I could draw.

When I first went to college, I started out as a journalism major, but did not like the program. After some soul searching, I decided to pursue art as a major. So I applied to my university’s fine arts department, put together a portfolio and got accepted into the program. Eventually receiving my BFA in drawing. Like many university art programs, they were mainly about teaching creativity. They made the work of the ‘old masters’ seem outdated and historical. Students today are very lucky to have the internet as a learning resource. I wish it was around when I was in school …

Chairman of the Board

I want thank the Drawing Academy and the other students. It inspires me to work harder and to try and get better all the time. I will admit it does get frustrating because my skill level limits what I see in my mind’s eye. I have been focusing on portraits of the human face because this seems to be the most difficult…

Reintroducing the Silverpoint Technique-

Reintroducing the Silverpoint Technique

Article by Vladimir London, Drawing Academy tutor

Russian artist Victor Koulbak

Victor Koulbak is best known for reintroducing the technique of silverpoint to the art world. This drawing technique takes its origin in the Renaissance time and now is almost forgotten.

Victor was the second-born child in his family. He was born on March the 12th, 1946 in Moscow, Russia. While his father was employed as a pilot in the Russian military, his mother was content to stay home and raise their children. It was Victor’s mother who first took notice of his capacity in regards to drawing, and she who brought him to the Academy of Fine Arts located in Moscow; here Victor was employed at study for the full four years. He later recalled those years with fondness: “There, we were taught the arts. The method of teaching used was most classic. We were held strictly to only one standard – accuracy. I liked it, and I was happy.”

“On a regular basis, the choicest work was posted in one window on the street. On the first occasion that my work was posted, I was very proud, and brought my mother and sister to see it. They were pleased with my success. They were outraged however, when on another occasion we found that the window had been broken and the singular posted item- mine- was stolen. It was for me though, my first of accomplishments.”…
