Prime Minister

I am retired after 40 years in the accounting profession and have been drawing for about 9 months. Having never drawn with a purpose before, I found the process to be very challenging. Accountants like to ‘draw’ legible numbers in little boxes. After seeing some examples on youtube, I was fascinated with the hyperrealism of some of the portraits and still life people are able to do and unfortunately, was able to occasionally produce a drawing that people would say, usually questioningly, who they thought it was. They were correct about half the time. Undaunted, I press on. The pleasure of showing a portrait and have instant recognition of the subject is very satisfying. Drawing a person is very different from drawing a particular person.

Hungry for complete all encompassing art training

Hi, I am a 67 year old grandmother from New Brunswick, Canada.

I have been drawing and painting off and on all my life, but get frustrated with my efforts because there is so much I don’t know and have never been able to find a source where I could learn the things I want to. I want to reach a point in my drawing ability where I can draw whatever is in front of me with confidence and skill. Right now I have the desire but when I try I don’t know where to start or how to proceed.

I have been reviewing the Drawing Academy courses and they seem to be just what I am looking for. However, my only source of income is my pension and every penny counts, so I can’t afford the cost of your course.

Drawing by Alessia Podgorica

My name is Alessia Podgorica. I am eighteen years old and I live in Albania. I love painting and drawing as my father, who used to be an artist at my age. He told me I have a talent, so I decided to study in the high school of arts Jordan Misja in Tirana. I took part in the school’s competition an was accepted.

Today, I am a student in my third year of high school, still learning and trying to improve my skills in drawing and painting. I want to become a professional artist when I grow older, I think this what I can do better than everything else.

How to find models for drawing

How to find models for drawing

Question from William, Drawing Academy student

It seemed like in lesson 15 of Drawing Academy, you were recommending going to museum to sketch old master works, so I went to try it out. Also, it seems like you are putting sketching classical sculptures in the same category as sketching paintings. Wouldn’t sketching a sculpture of Heracles be different than sketching a painting? If not, what do you recommend instead for a deeper study in human anatomy? I do not have access to a model.

Sketching at Museums and Galleries

Sketching at Museums and Galleries

Question from William, Drawing Academy student

I went to the local art museum to sketch some classical sculptures. I found it rather difficult to sketch what I know versus what I see. My sketches were terrible, especially since people were walking around and kids were being kids. You are clearly a skilled individual.

I spoke with the front desk staff again before I left and they mentioned the issue of getting a permit for sketching. Is getting a sketching permit a common practice? They said its free, and that I can get a chair and drawing board (also free). I find it funny that they did not mentioned that earlier when I first got there and told them my intentions.

Also, how long should I spend on a sketch at a museum?

If you don’t believe in yourself, no one can believe in you!

Hello, I am Suaad (42 YO) a home staying mom of 2 kids (5 and 1), started 2 years ago to learn painting (copying mainly) for couples of months, and couldn’t continue due to pregnancy, giving birth…, etc.

I need to learn basics (in drawing and painting) that I can learn painting rather than copying. I want to be the artist! and I have faith that I, personally, have the required means, and believe some of the classical art techniques is what I first need. That is why I want to win this course!

Italian Landscapes

I’m a self-taught aquarelle practitioner.

Art for me is a form of relaxation and meditation… planning mentally for the approach to a new subject (a still life, a landscape, a portrait…) the tools to use, the colours the paper, is already half of the journey…

Then the manual work begins, and there are lucky days when your hands go freely, the colors flow, the time is right and nothing comes to interfere…

Oil 4 Water

I am a 83 year old Rotarian. Since 2006 I have helped to supply life saving clean drinking water to over 2,000,000 people in 37 countries. I have supplied 465 paintings to Rotary Clubs in the last 4 years so they can use them to raise money for humanitarian causes. I would like to add portraits and a drawing class would be fantastic.

No Longer Waiting

Since I was little, I wanted to draw and be an artist like my grandpa. I always struggled with myself, not believing I was any good. I took a class here and there and always found it deeply satisfying to be able to put something down on paper. But I never did more than that, feeling frustrated by a lack of confidence in my skill and ability and the lack of family support.

Recently, everything in my life started falling away from me – work, finances, home, people – and friends took me, their home becoming a refuge in this downfall. 1 ½ years ago I finally stopped trying to make something happen in order to go deep within myself and what was happening, in order to allow whatever was happening to happen and allow whatever wanted to come forward to do so. Art showed up. For the past 9 months I have been doing something everyday, even if it is only one sketch and asking for supplies at Christmas…
