Mary Magdalene in art

One of the most famous women in Christian tradition is Mary Magdalene. Her presence in Jesus’ life has been debated since the beginning. While some people, mainly followers of Christianity, have no doubt that she was a prostitute who Jesus helped and redeem herself to the point that she became a saint, other are not so sure about this narration. There are some people who have said that contrary to the known tale in the bible, Mary Magdalene was in fact Jesus’ wife or that she was one more of his apostles. There is no surprise in the reaction that the Church has towards this declaration. The implications are huge! But, I am not here to talk about Mary Magdalene’s true story. In this article I will explore how the Old Masters have managed to depict her.

Jacob van Hulsdonck, born in Antwerp, was a still life painter from the early 1600s. He was an exquisite artist who focused mainly on painting fruit bowls, flowers, and banquet-style masterpieces. In one of his most well-known pieces, a painting titled Still Life with Lemons, Oranges, and Pomegranate, each and every detail found within, speaks for itself.

Plains Indian, Friend of Mine

I am a retired teacher, and wish to improve my drawing ability to be able to draw what is in my mind.

I wish to draw from my imagination, which I can do a bit but not to my satisfaction.

I am impressed by the promo material and decided that the Drawing Academy is a good fit for me. It is now or never for me as I am in my 60’s and still have learning in my future.

A Silver Lining

I’ve have been paying close attention to the Drawing Academy for over a year now. I’ve been struggling with fighting the worst enemy: myself.

I’ve always wanted to be an artist, but at the same time, I’ve always made excuses not to do it. I don’t know why, but I can’t seem to find the strength to start. I’ve tried it a few times already, but since I’ve never found a place where they teach you absolutely everything you need to know since the beginning, I always end up dropping it. And I don’t want that anymore.

I really want to be an artist!

Hello everyone, my name is Elisa and I’m a 27 year old illustrator from Chile.

Seeing art and making art are two of my favorite things about being alive. Art helps me keep moving forward.

I studied Visual Arts between 2008 and 2012, but the art school I went to wasn’t really focused on Fine Arts. Because of this, academic drawing is still a big challenge for me. I’ve wanted to learn more about human anatomy, perspective and shading for a long time, since I draw a lot from imagination and I don’t always get these things right.

I think Drawing Academy’s video lessons could help me a lot with that, and also with drawing realistic animals, which is another interest of mine (scientific illustration).

Art is my life

I like drawing very much, but it seems I don’t have time; in fact, it’s not true. I do not have a method to use my time. I need a school!

Time after time, I discover that all I want to do is art, and drawing is the basis to improve my works, to communicate the sense of discovery I had every time. I can easily communicate through drawings, without words.

Self Esteem from your artworks

Hello, I am Antoinette Apondi from Nairobi, Kenya. I am 23 years of age and I am an artist.

Art is very important in my life because it is what I have ever known since I was a child. I can say that art contributes majorly to my self esteem because once I finish a drawing or painting I feel really good about myself. But recently, despite finishing my pieces I do not really feel as good as I used to because I have realized that I depend too much on photo references and I cannot come up with an artwork from memory and even if it was from life, I will really struggle with the proportions and process of developing it.

From the videos on YouTube I know that Drawing Academy could help me out with this problem, because I am starting to feel like I am not a real artist if I continue drawing from photos!

Drawing Academy graduate

I have been drawing for many years, but all those years before enrolling in the Drawing Academy I did not know a human head proportions and anatomy and had been using grid to copy portraits. I also didn’t know how to draw in perspective.

I have learnt a lot in the Drawing Academy course. Now I can draw what I see or imagine (even though it’s not perfect) because I know the rules of constructive drawing, understand perspective and proportions and know the steps of portrait drawing.

I can proudly say that my drawing skills improved so much thanks to this drawing course.

I would recommend Drawing Academy to everyone who would like to learn professional drawing techniques and push drawing skill on a higher level.

J.E. Millais’ The Order of Release – a Pre Raphaelite love story

The first time I saw Sir John Everett Millais’ painting The Order of Release I was thirteen years old and struggling to stay alert in Mister Harvey’s gloomy art class. In the darkened classroom the teacher, a deeply religious man, showed slide after slide of Renaissance masterpieces, each projection accompanied by a long, tedious explanation of its origins, technical merits, and biblical authenticity. Even at that tender age I wondered whether there should be a limit on how many depictions of the Madonna and child, hovering angels, and crucified Christs there were in the world. Little did I know.

When The Order of Release appeared on the screen it was as though a light had been switched on. To my young mind the painting instantly made sense and the story it told unfolded in my imagination as if by osmosis.

I am a self taught artist. I have been drawing since I was a little girl, and have always loved art. I started off drawing the horses on my grandparents farm from memory, and then as I got older i started drawing from photos.

I use other art works from you-tube and google to improve my techniques and styles of drawing.
