The simple dignity of the past

I am a 75 year old retired man. I have dabbled in art all of my life but was not able to dedicate much time to it. Now that I am retired and less able to do the landscaping and home improvement work I used to enjoy, I have more time for art.

It is now one of the few things I can accomplish to gain personal satisfaction. I would, of course, like to get better in my art and even imagine I might someday sell some of my work and recoup some of the expenses I spent to create it.

Jack Edson Adams Master Artist

Jack Edson Adams Master ArtistA brief bio of Jack Adams

The art career of Jack Adams is a testimony to the survival of a right-brained person in our left-brained word! Jack inherited the gift of drawing from his Grandfather. And his parents supported the talent as a hobby, not a career. His father was in the Army and hoped for Jack to graduate from West Point. But in his senior year in High School , Jack discovered the annual competition held by Fisher Body for aspiring young car designers. He submitted a sleek, black , high-finned model… and won! General Motors advised Jack to study at the Art Center College of Design in LA. He applied there, and dutifully , he also applied to West Point…the United States Military Academy. He was accepted to both. He went to West Point. Upon graduation however, he asked for an assignment in Air Defense Artillery (the sole purpose of which was to be assigned to a Nike Missile base in Los Angeles, in order to attend Art Center at night-school). And he found his purpose in the “Grand Scheme” of things…. Design.

They were once young

I am a retired NYPD Lieutenant and former captain in the U.S. Army Special Forces. For the past thirty years I have been a United Methodist pastor. Due to my background that can be stressful at times, I find that art keeps me centered and provides calm in my life.

If I have any challenges in my art, and there are many, I would say the fundamentals of drawing would be one. The other would be getting a good handle on color and color mixing.

Art is a beautiful skill that I wish I could acquire!

Hi everyone, I’m Salh and I’m a 23 guy from Algeria. I’ve been introduced to art a few years back by a friend and I have fallen in love with it ever since, the way it allows me to see more colors where ever I look and the way simple things are all of a sudden much more complicated and interesting, the sky is no longer a solid blue and a rock is no longer a block of randomness, I absolutely love being able to see more of the world.

The secret of correct foreshortening in drawing

The secret of correct foreshortening in drawing

Question from Victoria

I am a portrait painter and narrative painter. Unfortunately, I have had to be dependent on photos because I am unable to do live sittings with my subjects due to time constraints and the ages of my subjects, so my life drawing skills are very weak, though I continue to sketch daily.

Here’s my question – How to get correct foreshortening using values?

Sketches and questions from Danielle, Drawing Academy student

Hello,

It has been a while since I sent anything; life has been very busy and hectic. I have been drawing—not as much as I wish, but I have.

These are studies of skulls morphing into the flesh, trying to understand the underlying structure and outer elements.

The structural drawing remains a challenge for me. I do realize, though, that any problem usually stems from not getting the structure right from the beginning. I realize I lack patience in that step; I just want to get going.
