Belvedere Torso
Artwork by Paris, Drawing Academy student
I have always wanted to draw this piece. I know some of my proportions are off, but overall I like what I was able to accomplish.
As a Drawing Academy student, you can exhibit your artworks in this online gallery.
We want to see your drawings before, during and after the Drawing Academy Course.

Annette Smith enrolled in the Drawing Academy online course in 2018 and has been a very active student and our art community contributor ever since. Her drawing skills were steadily growing with every drawing task she did. She was constantly in contact with the Academy tutors, sending her artworks for critique and getting our feedback. She completed a great array of various exercises, starting from very simple yet essential tasks like how to sharpen and hold a pencil the correct way, how to draw in perspective, how to use constructive drawing principles, how to draw man-made and organic objects from life, memory and imagination, how to use rules of aerial perspective, how to use good composition in artworks, and so much more.
Since my childhood I was so fascinated with colors and colored pencils. My drawings at school was a bit outstanding from other students. Magazines and illustrations was the point of my interest. I drew film stars and Princess with graphite pencils when I was a teenager, I even drew my mom and sisters and it was almost correct.
I went to painting classes, there I learnt more about different painting materials.
One day, I came across Drawing Academy and realised that it was the course for me.
Hello,
I used to avoid to draw all my life after a pretty sad story in my childhood. But life is short so I’ve tried to draw a couple of images (with smudging) watching youtube. And I decided that I want to draw properly knowing what I’m doing and why. So I’m here. At last, free-hand drawing doesn’t scare me anymore.
I love Da Vinci. So I decided to draw a more simplified version of his famous painting. I took this subject for it’s expression and beauty.
Somehow your words “draw what you know, not what you see” just didn’t click with me. While doing some practice drawing today, I began to realize that it is not only drawing what you know, but to feel the curves that round the face, the eyes, lids, nose, lips, etc. I have never drawn this way before. I started my old way, and I realized I had to feel the roundness and curves to have them stand out. In the past, by luck, some of my copying of photos did produce many of those curves. However, I now realize that this is a much better way to draw. Sorry it took me so long to understand how to make curves. I will let you know how this drawing turns out.
I love drawing but always felt that I had to have more skills. Most of all I wanted lo learn to draw what I imagine and give my drawings a bit of magic but it has to be believable.
I am working on faces and portraits.
Drawing is colored pencil and silverpoint
