Landscape's memory: The art of Jose Maria Velasco

Landscape’s memory: The art of Jose Maria Velasco

Article by Octavio Alonso Maya Castro

When I was young, I saw an illustration on the cover of the Mexico geography book – the painting of a landscape dominated by a train that was moving trough a countryside, it was charming and neat…

Big thanks for Drawing Academy!

Hello,

I found the Drawing Academy website when I was searching for drawing courses on the internet.

I am a tattoo artist and drawing is absolutely necessary for me. I was able to copy-draw photos; however, I couldn’t draw from imagination and wanted to learn how to do that, so I could express my feelings and ideas.

When I found the Drawing Academy course and read all information about it, it hooked me up. The idea that I can learn drawing without using any photos was amazing. The course wasn’t too expensive, so I bought it without any delay…

Following my Dream

I started drawing and painting very young with my first original oils from my sister’s leftover paint by number kit and on cardboard saved by my mother. I was always drawing on the back of paper she saved that was clean on one side. Nothing was wasted; it was recycling before it was cool.

I did not go to art school because it was not a practical choice to my family so I went for design instead. I ended up drafting architectural plans because they were needed for permits for contractors, architects and homeowners building their dreams with my drawing tools and never went into computer-aided design but I was able to help support my family with it when my husband was in college and my kids were little…

Art is My Life

I have always been interested in faces, no idea why. Sometimes, when I am speaking to someone, I find myself drawing their face in space with my index finger.

One day, out of the blue, I decided to start walking through my neighborhood, stopping people that I thought looked “interesting” and asking them if I could take their photo. I collected about 75 shots of people that lived here in my Chicago neighborhood.

Over the following year, I drew about 50 or so portraits, using graphite pencils. Looking back, I wouldn’t show these to anyone today, although I learned a lot about technique. I picked up some excellent hints from the Drawing Academy site (along with some YouTube videos) and have been continuing my journey…

Questions from Gabriel, Drawing Academy student

Hi Vladimir!

This time I have some questions about the depiction of a human head:

1. On “Drawing Lesson 5, Part 1 – How to Draw a Head”, you explain: “the full width of the head is two-thirds of the total height”. I have had some trouble in drawing this on the front view. First, I draw a vertical axis and then a horizontal axis crossing it in the middle, but once I draw the horizontal axis and define its boundaries, its half-width doesn’t fit 3 times the total height. I end up losing a lot of time trying to fix this. How should I draw these proportions more accurately?

2. Why does the skull look so wide in profile? Is it possible to draw it narrower when needed? (Sometimes I find people in reality don’t have such a “wide” skull in profile)

3. When drawing in profile or in front view, where is the line of the mouth located exactly?

4. Is it a good idea to copy step by step the whole drawings depicted in the video lessons? (So far, that’s what I’ve been doing). If not, which would be the best way to take advantage of the video lessons?

Bored with the Mortar Board

My name is Peter Williams and I have recently graduated with a B.A. Hons in fine art from university. With my qualification well secured under my cap, or should I say mortar board, I feel ready to put this futile experiment behind me and to start to learn how to paint and draw. This may sound a little cynical, but these feelings are well founded and have their roots in the modern model of art tuition, a model which only serves as an engine for frustration. From this model, the idea or concept reigns supreme, and technique sits in the back benches, suppressed by the Lords of modern isms and conceptual constraints…
