Portrait of Laura

Portrait of Laura

Artwork by Dan S., Drawing Academy student

This is a portrait of Laura in charcoal. I usually draw in graphite, but I have never drawn a portrait before in charcoal and thought I would like to try.

I really like both mediums for different reasons. Graphite is so elegant and subtle. Charcoal allows for very easy deep, dark shadow.

Thanks for looking at my drawing.

Hey Dan, For a first charcoal drawing, It looks great!! I personally just started drawing a couple months ago and have not ventured into a complete charcoal drawing in portrait, still a little timid with it. I figured it would be hard to erase since it’s so dark, and I still have trouble with proportions, so…. . Did you find this to be true? The only critique I would give is I think the right eye is a little lower in the portrait than the left eye. I noticed myself doing this a lot and now check my rough in for this issue with a pencil to make sure both eyes are even and level and the same size, or maybe one of her eyes are a little lower than the other, (?). The hair is absolutely great, I am still having a lot of trouble with it, but your highlights rock, very realistic.
