Is drawing an inborn talent?
Question from Deborah
Hello,
I have always wanted to draw. I do not see any evidence of having real talent, but everything I read suggests that I can learn to draw. I have been reading about your classes and read that you offer scholarships for the online course. I am retired, and even though I would love to learn to draw.
Thanks in advance for your time.
Dear Deborah,
Drawing is a skill. As any other skill, it can be learned. There are no people with an inborn talent for drawing. If you know someone who could speak, walk or draw from the first day of their life, let me know; I would like to hear about such a miracle.
There are people with natural inclination to drawing, and those people spend thousands of hours practicing it without external motivation. Of course, quantity grows into quality; this quality others call a “talent” without taking into consideration how much time and effort such an artist invested in his or her skills.
Here’s what Michelangelo Buonarroti, one of the best artists ever lived said:
“If people knew how hard I worked to get my mastery, it wouldn’t seem so wonderful after all.”

Natalie Richie and Vladimir London,
Thank you for all you do and in particular for this observation.
I have taught art to senior citizens, age 50 to 97 for the past 4 years. Many of them never drew before and really learned how to draw and draw well. It has been quite a miraculous experience for me. (I never knew Michelangelo was humble. He was still great :) )
Best Regards,
