Is an art degree important?

Art degree

Question from Jay

Thank you for your video – The Shocking Truth About Art Education

But, a University or art school can give me a full-blown college degree or master’s degree, something highly regarded (and required) by galleries throughout the world as an indicator of an established or dedicated professional artist. Does your course offer that or something that will give me clout with galleries or collectors?

Answer from Vladimir London, Drawing Academy Tutor

Hi Jay,

Many thanks for your opinion. Your point of view is valid, but for an ideal world, which we’re not living in : )

A master degree no longer indicates your level of education. Every employer knows that.

However, because education is a business in the Western world, you are made to believe that degree will get you a job, status and income. Far from it!

Regarding art galleries, they couldn’t care less what art degree you have (and they never did, by the way). Thinking otherwise is naive at least.

As for art collectors and clients, the main question they have is how good your art and what you can do for them, not what papers you can show.

The “full-blown college degree” is equal to tens (or sometimes hundreds) of thousands dollars “fully blown” away.

You need to face the reality of the 21st century. Educate yourself by all means; your real knowledge, talents and experience are valid, not a piece of paper that says you are an artist.
