Ilya Repin

Ilya Repin

Article by Vladimir London, Drawing Academy tutor

Ilya Repin was born on 24 July 1844, in Chuguevo, Ukraine. A talented artist from a young age, local icon painters recognized his gifts and took him under their wing. The young man also worked for them, earning enough money to move to St. Petersburg and enter a painting school, from which he ascended in 1863 to join the Academy of Fine Arts. Despite his personal gifts, he viewed himself as merely lucky, and worked as a house-painter to support himself during his studies.

The most famous painting from his early period, and the one that began his ascent within the art world, was Barge Haulers on the Volga. Inspired by scene he witnessed on Neva River, the painting depicts a collection of men harnessed together, struggling to pull a large ship along the river. Repin created a Realist masterpiece in this painting, using a muted palette of earth tones and depicting real men (he found actually men with the harried but resolute expressions to model the characters in the painting) rather than sentimentalized caricatures. Barge Haulers sharply divided the opinions of the art world, with some conservative critics condemning the blunt humanity. Repin’s skill, however, was beyond reproach. ..

How do I emphasize important areas in a work of art

How do I emphasize important areas in a work of art?

Artwork by Johann Krammer

Dear Vladimir,

I do not know if airplanes are an appropriate topic here in this community, but airplanes are a very good way for me to develop my painting skills.

It is much easier for me to paint technical surfaces than it is to paint human faces.

For me, it is the preliminary step to painting human faces (I failed at my first try), so I can learn about the how different painting media behave. But I remember a statement in your videos that it is not important what you are drawing.

My question is not about how to draw or how to paint airplanes, it is more a question of how to guide the interest of the viewer to the most interesting points in a picture.
The picture shows a pilot in his airplane. The picture is not finished now…

A Return to a Forgotten Dream

Konnichiwa.

My name is Bronwen and I am a mother, teacher, artist and dreamer. Though I’m originally from South Africa I moved to Japan in 2005 with my husband following a year later. I work here are an assistant English teacher in elementary schools and have two beautiful children of my own.

I’ve been drawing since I was young, but always struggled with it. I didn’t realize it at the time but I have some very strong leanings towards neo-classical and realist styles so I would get very frustrated with myself when I couldn’t reproduce what I saw. In high school I took art as one of my classes but my teacher and I got on very badly. She was very much an abstract art person while I would stare at a Jackson Pollock painting thinking, “I don’t get it.” Impressionism and Expressionism always felt unfinished to me, like someone had forgotten to go in and add all the details. At the time the teacher told me that an artist was not a camera so trying to faithfully re-create what we saw was futile and worthless. Somewhat dejected with this whole outlook and thinking that this was what ‘modern art’ was all about, I went to university to major in classical studies and drama instead of going to art school…

Still Life Extrapolation

Artwork by Lynn Osepchuk

I am an art educator wishing to continue my own personal growth in fine art which I’ve been doing since an early teen.

The work I’m submitting is a still life extrapolation that was done in a drawing course at The Art Institute of Philadelphia, Pa. in 2012.

With the extrapolation technique, that paper is covered with black charcoal and using a kneaded eraser, …

How to Draw Eyelashes

Question from Ray, Drawing Academy student

I seem to have a real difficulty getting the eye lashes rendered. It seems as though when I do an eye on a male, as soon as I start rendering the eye lashes, the eye soon becomes a woman’s eye. I have tried laying in sparse lashes, very small, and then a few longer ones without any luck. The bottom lashes are just fine, very soft and not to many. I am sure there is some way to solve this issue…
