Looking to level up
Hello, my name is Kristen, and I’m a 30 year old Canadian artist wannabe, working at a thrift store. I graduated from college as a designer for theatre, but as a slow learner was overwhelmed by the plethora of artistic mediums to practice in such a short period of time. I’ve recently returned to the foundations with simple pencil and paper, which has truly renewed my love for art. I just want to draw and learn and draw better and inspire and be inspired.
Art has always been a part of my life in some way or another, whether it’s with a pencil, paints, textiles or clay; I need to make something. Ideas are limitless, what limits me is the lack of confidence to teach myself to develop the skills required.
There is too much to learn in art to master everything, but that’s just part of the joy of it. There is always room for improvement and discovering new things. Currently, understanding anatomy and lighting are the obstacles I am most focused on improving though. To effectively draw figures and portraits in proper perspective and lighting would be make me happiest.
I struggle to teach myself, and the Drawing Academy looks like such an amazingly helpful resource. The emphasis on helping to draw from imagination is what lures me the most; I don’t want to be a copier. Putting down on paper what I see in my head is really my goal, and is what I have the most difficulty with. I love fantasy and make-believe, but I love it more when it looks real, tangible and believable. I need a fine art’s teacher to help me draw realistically, which is why I want to win this course.
The artwork I submitted for this competition is truly the extent of my skills; I spent 4 days working on it! This was not easy for me by any means.
