Blooming Artist
Story and artwork from Rebecca Newberry
I’ve been dabbling in art (mostly painting) since I was young. To be honest, I was never very good. Just a few years ago I started getting back into art but taking it seriously this time. I got an assortment of art books and started trying to learn as fast as I could. I can’t learn fast enough now.
Art is therapeutic for me. I find when I’m having a difficult day, my problems seem to melt away when I’m in front of a canvas or have a pencil in my hand. When I am troubled, just thinking about painting brush strokes can make me feel better.
One of the challenges of my artwork is finding the time to create my vision. I know years of practice are necessary before I’ll get to the level that I want to be at. However, I am a mom of four young children, and it’s very difficult to find the balance between my two passions (my babies and my art). It’s one of the reasons why online video learning is so appealing to me. It can give me the training I need to get better while still being there for my family.
I used to think that I could never be good enough to have artwork in a gallery. Now I have started setting higher goals for myself. My ultimate goal is to become a master level artist. I’m not content anymore to just make “something pretty”. I want my artwork to be able to tell a story and have a deeper meaning. However, I will need to acquire the skill to accurately depict my vision first. The Drawing Academy can help with that.
When I first saw a video about the Drawing Academy I was blown away by how much I still need to learn. I would be so excited to see what the Drawing Academy could teach in such a short amount of time.
I’d really like to win the Drawing Academy course because I know it would help take my art to the next level. The professional artists that I watch and read about all say that drawing is an absolutely essential skill for painting.
I’m a self-taught emerging artist. I didn’t go to a high-end art school; in fact I barely graduated high school. I know the amount of work it’s going to take to get me to where I want to be as an artist and I’m willing to do it. When I meet that goal, I will have had the privilege of adding something beautiful and meaningful to the world for others to enjoy.
