What Art Materials do I need?

I want to enroll in the Drawing Academy course. Can you provide a suggested shopping list?

I know the first three lessons mention which supplies to get, but a list and possibly places to order online would be fantastic.

Many thanks for your question.

The purpose of the Drawing Academy is to give you necessary knowledge on how to draw whatever you see, think or imagine. Your talents will rely on your drawing skills, not on drawing tools and materials.

Drawing tools can be taken away, but your skills will be with you for a lifetime. That is why we do not advocate specific brands and suppliers of art materials.

In fact, it is perfectly possible to complete the whole Drawing Academy course with only few graphite pencils, drawing paper and an eraser or two.

You can get such supplies in any local art shop. Everything else is optional.

There are some online courses that put a major focus on particular drawing tools, 5 pencil grades, etc. In our view, such approach is erroneous, as it suggests that using only certain drawing tools a fine artist can achieve good results.

You would agree that a professional talented artist can create a masterpiece with any drawing tool at hand.

However, the best drawing materials will not help an amateur artist to create the same quality artwork if essential art skills are missing.

Today, the art market has the widest range of art materials ever available for an artist. The Old Masters would never dream or imagine such a variety.

So, why then we don’t have the same quality art anymore that the Old Masters were able to create with a very limited range of drawing tools by today’s standards?

With time, after working in different mediums, you will come up with your own preferences for particular drawing materials. However, what we want for you is to develop your art skills when you no longer rely on drawing tools but on your talents.
