Translating Imagination
Story and artwork from Tanisha
Hi! Like many other contestants here, I am a self-taught artist, who’s been dabbling in arts and crafts ever since I can remember. It’s always been a hobby and a passion of mine, but since I never learned the basics, I lack the fundamentals of creating a good piece.
I have a lot of trouble with proportions and used to rely heavily on tracing. (Now, I use gridding to help me plot my drawings.) I love the work of the Old Masters and have attempted to replicate their techniques, but when I’m painting/drawing people – especially faces, I have such difficulty with the anatomy, and have to use reference pictures. It gets frustrating having ideas in your head and not being able to fully develop them, and I get the feeling it takes a lot away from my motivation to create.
I am interested in venturing into comic designing and want to be able to create my own characters without painstakingly seeking out references to every single one of the poses I plan on drawing.
The Drawing Academy has an excellent course on anatomy that I believe will elevate not only my art, but also my mind in the way I perceive bodies and figures while drawing them.
In short, I want to be able to take the art in my mind and seamlessly translate it onto my paper/canvas, and I think the Drawing Academy course will really help me with that. This is an amazing opportunity and I thank the Academy for offering it to us. Thank you!
