The Joy of Life!
Story and artwork from Karen Dean
Hello, my name is Karen Dean, from Nova Scotia, Canada. I have recently retired and rediscovered art, and have started attending weekly life drawing sessions as my way of reactivating my passion for both drawing and painting. As I expose myself to new ideas and challenge myself to learn, I am discovering how important art is to me, both as a catalyst to know myself and to share with the world.
I feel like a beginner and am eager to learn the fundamentals of both drawing and painting. Then building on those fundamentals to master any medium that represents the way that I see the world. While I have had opportunity to attend watercolour workshops and did a drawing class about 25 years ago, I have not had sustained or formal art education. My goal is to understand, capture and express the personality of my chosen subject while keeping it fresh and alive. The drawing that I am submitting was drawn in one of the life drawing sessions from last year.
I am drawn to classical art and respond to the way that it speaks to me. I am also drawn to art that expresses emotion and has that unspoken element that draws you in. I am very impressed by what I have seen at the Drawing Academy and know that this is what I have been seeking. Seeing student works and the level of improvement shown are very inspiring.
The opportunity to win the course will provide the structure and fundamentals that I need to realize my greatest potential. I see this as the beginning of a very fulfilling journey as an successful artist and look forward to challenging myself to be the best that I can be.
