Story and artwork by Jennifer Ault
My background is in Fine Art in that I have a BA and MA in Fine Art. I have worked in schools as a secondary school teacher and teach adults art online.
In 2020 I lost my hearing in my right ear overnight; the cause was said to be viral. I had never imagined that this could happen so suddenly, and started to wear a hearing aid for the first time ever.
This self portrait is of me looking at myself wearing the hearing aid; adjusting to a new part of me so to speak.
I still teach art and want to continue refining , developing and growing my observational drawing skills in particular. My own work is very much involved with the human body and our internal and external selves. Where does one end and the other begin?
Since losing my hearing I have begun to study the cochlea as it is so tiny and difficult to image; diagnosis is difficult. My interest in anatomy runs parallel to my love of art. I would very much like to study anatomy in relationship to drawing the body further and know that the Drawing Academy course touches on this.
I feel that the opportunity would help me grow and develop my own art practice as I have had minimal formal life drawing tuition and want to share my knowledge with students and grow as a practising artist.
