Rite of Passage

Rite of Passage

Story and artwork from Joseph P Giunta

Ever since I was old enough to hold a pencil, I filled tablets of paper with drawings. My favorite thing to do was draw. Decades later, drawing is still my favorite thing to do.

Of course, I was not good. Nevertheless, I kept drawing with the anticipation that the next image I put on paper would break through my awkward scrawls and become something worthy of praise. I would copy everything from comic strip characters to Rubens. I always wanted to be an artist.

Although I went to art school and studied art in college, I never stopped drawing and hoping for that breakthrough. Because every art teacher has his or her own approach to art, I still want to learn. Learning is challenging, but it is also fun and keeps an artist fresh. I think the most dangerous thing to happen to artists is to believe they have mastered the craft so well, there is nothing left for them to explore.

My biggest challenge is to create an image that will excite or at least, entertain the viewer.

I find the Drawing Academy to be one of those special schools that both teach and inspire. For that reason, I hope to be a winner. I want to continue to learn and grow.

My goal as an artist is to show the beauty of the commonplace. I want to draw the simple tools we use every day because they carry the personality of the user. I want to render the functional beauty of objects and the people who use them. I want to produce images of people working in the midst of a hi-tech office or a worn-down farmhouse porch. They write their memoirs in every line or wrinkle on their faces.

I hope people will vote for me because they believe I have something worth developing – something that should be encouraged. If I do not win, I hope the award will go to an artist like that. Thank you.
