Material desperation in a virtual world
Story and artwork from Carlos Valle
Hello I am Carlos; I’m Salvadoran and currently live in Buenos Aires Argentina I moved here 5 years ago to go to film school. My university has very historical approach to film and it is studied taking into account art history and the impact that cinema had on the early 20th century. The study of the human figure, composition, shadows, highlights, color and the impact of these aspects on an image were taken by cinema from painting and drawing and are still the foundation of it. On march 2020 with the first lockdown the world of filmmaking changed, not only the big productions were affected, but also the film students that used to run around the city making movies were now confined to their apartments. Even in that isolation I was able to produce 2 short films but there is a limit to how much you can produce with so little resources, material and emotional.
Is in that moment when I decided to turn to the plastic arts to satisfy the need to create something different, me who had never been able to draw or paint anything successfully, at first the videos found online were of not use, I watched people draw, reduce complex figures to geometric ones and explain how the knowledge of anatomy played a part in the construction of the figure. After some time and a lot of practice my drawings started to gain volume and shape, but I now understand the path to be good is a long one.
I am here now, asking for help and guidance.
Thank you for reading
Carlos
