Graphite pencils HB on paper
Artwork and story from Mariia M
I found myself compelled to begin a new chapter of my life at an age when many have already found stability. Professionally, I am far removed from the world of art—the power of a simple pencil allowed me to draft, not to draw—yet my heart has always belonged to classical aesthetics. During this transitional period, I turned to art to find a sense of home within myself.
Art is my sanctuary and my anchor. After leaving Ukraine, I felt that the bright colors of my previous life had faded. This is why I chose graphite — the simplicity and honesty of a pencil resonated with my soul more than any paint could. Along with reading, drawing allows me to recharge, find moral rest, and process the experience of living between two worlds. It is my way of preserving my inner light.
Beyond the lack of formal academic training, my biggest challenge is finding the focus to create amidst instability. However, it is precisely the challenge of mastering anatomy and light that keeps my mind sharp and provides a sense of constructive purpose.
I want to learn how to capture the full depth of human emotion through classical techniques. I want to move beyond simple sketching and gain the professional skills to create portraits that tell a story without words.
I admire the Drawing Academy for its commitment to traditional values in art. In a world that feels broken, the structure and discipline of classical drawing offer a sense of order and timeless beauty.
Winning this course would give me a clear path for development during a time when my future feels uncertain. It would be a gift of knowledge that helps me transform my pain and experiences into professional-level art.
I hope my story reminds others that art can be a powerful tool for survival and mental healing. By voting for me, you are supporting the belief that even when ‘the paints have faded,’ the human spirit can still create something meaningful and beautiful.

I wish your art good luck.
