Shining Through The Darkness

Shining Through The Darkness

By Dianne Bauer

I have always been an artist. Even managed a year of study before poverty and real world necessities took over. Now decades have passed and I turn my focus to increasing my skills. The Academy has been a god send in truly teaching me the old world what and how of the oil medium.

In my mind reside paintings demanding to be brought to life. It is my wish to complete these works and send them out into the world. A mark of my time on this earth so too speak and a gift to my children.

I hope you find my attempts acceptable….

The wave

The wave

By Sandra L Bailey AKA. – Xhandi

I have been battling against finding a position for many years and could never fit into a 9-5 job.

I was always good at art but haven’t been able to sell any and decided to work more on Drawing and Painting. I found my niche.

I have a wonderful Partner that believes in me. Having 2 children that have a disability. I try hard for them to express themselves with art as my youngest has difficulty expressing himself with speech…

Need to Draw!

Need to Draw!

By Sherry L. Massey

I’ve been drawing since so little I cannot even remember when I didn’t have a pencil or crayon on my hand. What I do remember is winning my first and only art contest at the age of 6. I am sure that I am the only one who remembers this amazing feat and I still remember the drawing I did that ran away with the award…a beehive hanging from a block hanging from the top edge of the paper, a few bees swarming around the hive opening. The sky took up the top third of the paper, the ground the bottom third. What was in the middle? Maybe the bottom of the hive and a couple of free floating bees. Ok, ok, but I was 6!

I was always the kid that never (and I do mean, NEVER!) went out of the lines with the crayons. Always outlined my coloring book pages, always neat and. Just. So. It is a curse, really.

I graduated from high school with honors. Was an Illinois State Scholar. Started college. Quit. Went back when I was 35, almost 36, graduated at 39 with a BBA in both accounting and finance (double major). Yes. I am your typical left brained artist wannabe. I never did take art in high school but sure loved having art in grade school. This was way back in the day when schools still included art and music as part of the normal curriculum. I also took both drawing classes and watercolor classes at the college level. I’ve taken the art correspondence courses. What I have not been able to do is master drawing. It is what I started out doing, what I’ve played with since very young, what I want to do so badly that it hurts. I have drawing book upon drawing book and can do a reasonable copy. Not perfect, not identical, not by any stretch of the imagination. What I cannot do is draw well from life (3 dimensional subjects), and I am definitely not consistent. Even when I start out well, I end up doing something to screw it up. I’ve tried the drawing from the right side of the brain book and some of those tips help. But for me consistency is what I strive for, what I want. I believe good drawing is foundational to art. I am lacking foundation and I need it so desperately! …

Life in Lines

I’m self employed, art is my hobby. I’m drawing sketches without any guidance and learning, but I want to learn to explore my skills.

Portrait of Melissa “Mells Bells” in oils

Portrait of Melissa “Mells Bells” in oils

By Jackie Hogan

I first started to take Art classes about three years ago, and absolutely love it. I prefer to work with oils but I also love to just draw with pencil too. I try to improve how I work with each new painting pushing myself to do better, I get great pleasure each time I complete something new.

This painting is of a good friend who worked for me a few years ago, she is now living in another country and does some modelling, she kindly gave me permission to paint her from one of her modelling photos.

Sonia Shah Drawing

Sonia Shah Drawing

By Sonia Shah

Hey this is Sonia. I love doing art work and I’m the art lover. I’m doing it since child hood (though I’m not that old; I have come to next stage the teenage one long way to go) have not learnt the art specifically as a field. But as a hobby I have I do it. Have collection of the stuff because I wish to have my record to be noted. The painting or sketches I do I quote them too… Often they are like my diaries expressing the stuff. A great way to get a relieve; tour thoughts coming out as a creation.

Lost my head

Lost my head

By Anita Nash

I have enjoyed drawing and painting for the last 20 years or so. I did a one year course in art and design after I left secondary school, which to be honest did not teach me very much.

I then went to art college and studied sculpture and combined media for 2 years. Honestly, the art college I attended was a bit of a joke. There was absolutely no technical training, it was all conceptual based. They wanted you to use video, sound and performance art, which I found very disheartening.

At present I am a lone parent at home raising my two children, and drawing and painting whenever I get the chance. I would love to receive a Drawing Academy placement, as I really would love to develop better drawing skills and pursue my dream to become a successful working artist. I would be ecstatic if I was chosen to receive a free Drawing Academy place…

My Journey to becoming a fine artists

My Journey to becoming a fine artists

By Scott Rymill-Butcher

Hello to everyone,

My name is Scott, I have been dreaming of becoming a fine artist since I can remember sitting at the kitchen table drawing cartoon characters and copying pictures form my nanas calendars. The years have passed and I’m still not close to my dream. Like everyone work and life has gotten in the way. I have recently had a change in my life, and having to consider options to new career possibilities. But much like everything leading up till now, all I think about everyday is wanting to become the fine artist I see myself to be, drawing, painting and creating everyday wanting to submerge my whole self into art. Hoping to support my family though what I love and wish to achieve. I have come to realise that some time is needed on the foundation, in becoming a fine artist. And what better place to start, than back to the building blocks of every great fine artist has.

“My journey starts here”….

A sacred search for the old masters techniques

A sacred search for the old masters techniques

By Camilo Rodriguez

Hey guys I am a South American artist who moved in Australia two years ago, always I have been a self learning person, I love religious and classic art so my style absorbs lots of elements from it, that I like to mix them with contemporary stuff. I have been studying the human figure and classic portrait, although there is a lot of websites and online teachers, I found the Drawing Academy the perfect site in where for sure I will enhance my drawing skills, and acquire all the techniques that the old masters used. Since I got to this country I have been searching for schools where to study drawing and painting but none of them teach the classic techniques, so I ended up studying Illustration mostly for learning digital and for understanding how the industry works. I am convinced that if I do this course I will take my art and my style into a higher level…

The importance of a well sketched under-painting

The importance of a well sketched under-painting

By James Doherty

Painting has been a passion of mine for years I would only do light rough sketches in turp and burnt sienna. Since I have been sketching more in charcoal and using them as my under paintings I can see a huge improvement in my finished paintings.

The sketch I submitted is of Madame Du Barry she was the last mistress of king Louise the XV of France and was considered a fashion icon for more than 20 years until she became a victim of the French Revolution….
