Drawing From the Heart
Artworks and story from Diana Vernon
My name is Diana Vernon, I am interested in entering your competition for the drawing course. I have been reviewing many of your tutorials online and feel I have found an invaluable resource for learning classical drawing techniques and improve my artistic skills in your program. I took your on line skills assessment which revealed many areas of weakness. It amazes me that I have finally found something that addresses core deficits in my learning!
About me, I am a lifelong artist from my earliest memories and have had the gift of being supported in my artwork by instructors, friends and teachers throughout the years. I was making backdrops for the school plays, creating drawings for friends and myself, placed into separate classes for art all throughout my school years. I was the sixth child so funding for pursuit of art was limited but my Mother always found a way to provide tools or encourage me. Unfortunately, much of my studies did not entail a structured approach (which is now what I know I need!). I wanted so much to learn! I learned bits and pieces through the years, until I finally enrolled in a university program for art. I was sorely disappointed by the courses. I recall a vivid experience when I walked into our painting course first year (studio art emphasis) and was told “just paint”. I recall several of us looked at each other and asked why we were not starting with instruction in composition or value… and again told, “Just paint”. Not all of that time was wasted as I was introduced to many forms of art including lithography, ceramics and drawing but the courses never addressed core skills such as composition, value, classical forms and skills in rendering within perspective etc. I left school after 2 years and worked in a tile factory and hand painted there for 6.5 years and finally returned to university for studies in the healthcare industry in order to make a living. I married and raised a family and plunged myself into cooking as a creative outlet during those years. After 32 years I have ended that pursuit and have returned to my passion: art.
I want to learn. I want so much to improve my understanding of value, composition, perspective and improve my understanding of proportions so I can have a firm foundation to express myself thru my art. My main deficits appear to be in understanding proportions, composition, value. I lack confidence because I do not understand underlying structure in relation to proportion, although my years in healthcare have given me anatomical knowledge. I want so much to learn to handle media more efficiently and effectively! When I review your courses on You Tube, I just review and review and draw along, learning for the first time about these very foundational elements. In my heart I know this is a good path for me.
The Drawing Academy website has the potential to meet my artistic learning goals! I understand I have deficits but am not afraid to address them! I am free from my career and have the support of my husband but we have limited funds now. It is my hope that by winning this competition I can restart my learning and pursue my journey as an artist.
It is my hope that people will vote for me to support me in becoming who I was meant to be! To support me in becoming a better artist after years of being on my own, with limited guidance and training, disillusioned by what was supposed to be my art school training so many years ago.
Attached are some of the pieces I have created over the years. It is my humble request that you vote for me!
Sincerely,
Diana F Vernon
