Do you need drawing skills to become a concept artist?

Do you need drawing skills to become a concept artist?

Question from Sam

Can an aspiring animator or concept artist start a career from scratch with this course or is it just for realistic artists?

Also, can a student change to digital after completing the course, provided his career requires it?

Feedback from Vladimir London, Drawing Academy tutor

Hi Sam,

Many thanks for your question.

“Digital” is just a medium, like sanguine, charcoal, marble or glass. Whatever visual art you choose, you will always come to the same challenge – drawing skills.

Drawing is the foundation of all visual arts.

If you can draw skilfully, you would have much better chances of becoming whoever you want – a painter, sculptor, concept artist or animator.

Think of drawing like a non-verbal language of visual communication.

Comparing it to a spoken language, you need to know its vocabulary, grammar, spelling… without it you won’t be any good at writing poems, articles, books or simple letters (even if you use a computer rather than a pencil).

The same with drawing – without fundamental drawing skills, your abilities to be a good concept artist would be severely limited if not impossible.

In the Drawing Academy course, we do not base art education on a particular media. Instead, we provide video lessons to build a strong foundation every artist must have – proficient drawing skills.

In this drawing course, you will learn the fundamental principles of constructive drawing, rules of linear and aerial perspective, golden mean ratio, rules of composition, human anatomy, proportions of a human body, traditional techniques of rendering tonal values, and so on.

It doesn’t matter whether you do traditional or digital art, draw with a pencil on paper or with a stylus on a computer screen, the universal rules of perspective, human anatomy, the sequence of steps drawing portraits or figures will be the same.

If you want to become a successful concept artist, having good drawing skills is a must.

Think of any great digital artist; they all have one thing in common – they can draw. Can you?
