Daily exercises for learning figure drawing

Question from Peter
What might be the best daily drawing exercises for learning figure drawing?
Hi Peter,
You actually put the answer in your question – the keyword is “daily“.
It is not about some specific exercises, but practicing figurative drawing on a daily basis.
It is better to spend 15 minutes drawing figures every day than 4 hours twice a month.

Regarding specific drawing tasks, you can do the following:
- learn the human anatomy;
- learn proportions of a human body, head and face;
- do gesture sketches;
- do life drawing;
- copy the old masters;
- draw figures and portraits from memory and imagination;
- draw self-portraits;
- create multiple figure compositions;
- and so on…
There is no set in stone specific regime you must follow. However, it is important to have a task in mind and a goal that you want to achieve. For every task it might be as small as examining the golden proportions of phalanges of the hand or as big as creating a multi-figure composition.

I have this newly found passion for drawing, I am 44yrs. young and just learned this of myself. Now what do I do? Where do I go from here? At my age, would it be worth it to try and make something from this, like on a career path, or should I just leave it as my hobby? Help! Because I feel like I’m going to combust with the drive I have for this
Hi Carri,
Many thanks for your comment.
It is never too late. At 44 years young you’re just in the beginning.
