Artwork by Wendy Johnston
Sometimes Life Throws the Best Curveballs
My name is Wendy Johnston. I am a 52-year-old mother of 4 from Canada. My children are all grown and a number of years ago I suffered from medical issues that prevented me from continuing in the workforce. This came at such a time in my life that I felt I had lost purpose and direction and struggled daily with feelings of continued worth in a society that values such things.
After being on disability for 6+ years with mental health issues and a chronic pain condition, I found that I was still able to draw. The solace and comfort I found in making art gave me renewed hope.
Now I am in my first year of a Visual Arts Diploma at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, BC Canada. Although I am still disabled and struggle with my conditions daily, I have found a place in society where I still feel valued and able to contribute in my own meaningful way.
I have found such joy in the things I am creating, I can not imagine why I ever left art back in my youth. It really is true that when one door closes, another opens.
This drawing is called The Eye Patch.
