XVIII Century French Master

Artwork by Emmanuel

Rosalie Fragonard

Hello to you all art lovers,

My name is Emmanuel, I live in France, and I love to draw since I am a child.

I love the XVIII century French Masters for at least two reasons. First they have the technical heritage of the western renaissance, and they invented a new artistic style which is called “Roccoco” it means “Rocaille” in French.

I love copy their work to learn, I think it is one of the best way to learn. The drawing presented here is a copy of Fragonard’s portrait of his own daughter Rosalie. Is is made with the three chalk technique also known as the “trois crayons”.

It is a very good technique to learn the various behaviour of light and shadow over a face or anything else. You need a white chalk for the light, the black charcoal for the shadows and the sanguine for some local values. The tone of the paper is used as the half tone.

Please leave comments if you like it !!!!
Emmanuel.
