What are the best drawing tools?

What are the best drawing tools?

Question from Katja Soegaard

“When it comes to drawing tools, what brands would you recommend? Especially for those who don’t have the means to get what is considered “the best of the best.”

Answer from Vladimir London, Drawing Academy tutor
Watercolor by Vladimir London

I have to say that if your art teacher insists on certain art brands and art materials because “it’s the best,” take such advice very cautiously.

The choice of tools depends on individual preferences, working habits, and art styles. Taking such advice would limit you to someone else’s criteria that are not necessarily adequate for your personal artistic needs.

The best you can do is try various tools to test what works the best for you and refine your choices with time.

In the Drawing Academy, we do not advocate any art supply brands.

Instead, we teach fundamental drawing techniques that can be used to draw whatever you see, think, or imagine, regardless what art materials and tools you use. You can draw with a pencil on paper or with a finger on a dusty window; the constructive drawing principles, rules of perspective, human anatomy & body proportions, and the rules of compositions and golden proportions will be the same.

Nice point presented. I have explored a number of materials although I adhere principely to pencil and pen and ink. Different companies produce different qualities. I find this to be so with pencils.
