To Art!

Hi, my name is Ekene and I am currently an undergraduate at Wits University.

I’m studying Bcom law –a not so very artsy degree! I started drawing from a young age, probably six or seven and have only ever been self taught. I just dabbled y’know? I only started taking art seriously in 2014. I’ve spent a lot of money on art books, art materials and (excitingly!) bought my first easel during the December holidays. I come from a very academic family –so while the end product is appreciated, it’s difficult for my parents to understand why I practice ‘that drawing thing’.

I signed up a year or so ago to the Drawing Academy emails and I really like the structured learning that the course offers, how it covers all the comprehensive bits and bobs that an artist needs to know.

I would like to win the Drawing Academy course because I feel that I am at a stage where I’ve hit a “learning plateau” –I have the ability to draw things I see, but not the things I imagine. The drawing course offers this very skill that I need. I would love to further my art skills through this course.

Art right now is just a hobby that I’d one day like to turn into a career. I’ve got to circumvent the obstacles that stop me from persuing this career because “it’s not lucrative” or “you should have a career where people don’t pick you”.

Voting for me, helping me win this course will allow me to practice and become good enough to prove that I can become an animator or concept artist or a game designer on my own steam.
