The Body and Soul of Art

The Body and Soul of Art

Question from Dean Pridmore

“Which is more important: the subject of your art, or the way the piece is executed? I pose this question to you in the hopes of ascertaining a professional view on whether fine art is as much about capturing the emotion of the subject as it is about producing an accurate portrayal. Or can one be done without the other?”

Answer from Vladimir London, Drawing Academy Tutor

Hi Dean,

Drawing and visual art in general is just another means of communication. When you want to express your thoughts, your ideas, or your vision of the world, you have a variety of options: you can write a novel, you can make a speech, or create any number of other media. You can also represent yourself in a visual way by creating art.

So, I will rephrase your question: “Is talking about objects and events as much about the emotion of the subject as it is about producing an accurate representation of those objects and events?”

I hope you see my point. It all comes to questions of *WHAT* you want to represent and *HOW* you want to express it.

To make your verbal communication meaningful and emotional so it will influence other people, you need to have original thoughts, ideas, and opinions, as well as a sufficient vocabulary, knowledge of grammar, rhetorical skills, and so on.

The same applies to art. Having a desire to be creative is not enough to produce masterpieces; you also need some essential skills. When it all comes together, you have a powerful means of communication, and your art will stand the test of time.

I can’t help you with the “what;” that comes from within. However, I can definitely help you with the “how.” That’s where the Drawing Academy course will help you to learn professional drawing skills and knowledge.

To your creative success,

Vladimir London
