Imagination is Change
Artwork by Amanda Maillet
Hi, I am currently studying a bachelor of science in Zoology and Ecology at James Cook University in Australia.
I began drawing as a hobby and considered getting a degree in art but wondered if it would be worth the amount of money. Instead, I stuck with science, but keep moving forward in drawing and painting mainly focusing on animals finding it would help with my studies. Science and art may not seem to fit together, but the best scientists were the ones willing to think outside the box.
Creativity is important in science and spending time in the field requires you to take lots of notes about what you see. As the saying goes ‘A picture’s worth a thousand words,’ I often like to add drawings to my field book like naturalist of the past. So improving my skills in drawing what I see is one of my main focuses along with drawing things from memory.
I hope to use art as a way to help improve my observational skills not just as an artist, but as a scientist as well.
I like the idea of learning from the old masters a going back to the basics.
I want to win the Drawing Academy course to improve on drawing what I see and from memory.
With each drawing/painting I do I always go back not liking everything I see and wanting to redo it I hope to improve but having student loans to pay off I can’t afford to pay for the course.
