Choosing a drawing paper

When it comes to choosing a particular kind of paper, many artists do not realize how important this decision is. This video part will explain in details the vast array of drawing papers and what you need to know to select the paper, which will enhance your artwork appearance and preserve it for many years. The paper choice decision must be based on such factors as what artworks you want to do, the paper’s whiteness, the paper tooth, and the paper feel.

Good drawing paper is made of cotton, not wood paper pulp, which is why it is more expensive. Paper can be hot- or cold-pressed; hot-pressed has a smoother and tougher surface, while cold-pressed is good for coloured pencils, charcoal and pastels.

Silver point and Metal-point drawing tools and grounds

In the Drawing Academy, you will also discover the Metal-Point drawing technique. This is an almost forgotten medium because it demands a great deal of drawing discipline. The method is very old and precedes graphite drawing.
