Hello,

I took your previous advice on how to shade with chalk pencil. I had to expose quite a bit of the chalk to sharpen it into a lasting point.

I decided not to smudge the marks.

The drawing I included is a copy of Masaccio’s St Paul.

Hello Slater,

Many thanks for your drawing in red chalk. I like it. It is important that you are developing your skills and trying other drawing mediums.

I also support you in choosing not to smudge the pencil strokes. At this stage, you will benefit from mastering your hatching skills rather than aiming for a smooth finish.

Making beautiful pencil marks is not as straight forward as it might look. It takes time and practice as well as great learning resources.

Have a look at the drawings below, which are created in red chalk. Research the Old Masters and examine how they used strokes.
