Breaking the Ties that Blind

Hello!

I’m Kate Evans a freelance and emerging fine artist based in Wales. I have been drawing and painting since i was the age of three and since then I have venturing into the dark woods of the subconscious. I could be possibly described as a surrealist but i guess without pigeon holing myself I can say that I favourably describe in a visual sense the dimension of quirky distorted realities.

More often than not I have described colourful, sometimes comical narratives within my practice, however the project that I wish to present to you was totally outside anything that I had created before. The series I created called, “Breaking the Ties that Blind” was based on gritty harsh reality and the pathological activity of narcissists and their overwhelming power over a weaker individual.

There are narcissists all around you, there are real life monsters not hiding in the closet but in the real world. The people that push past you on their way to work because somehow where they are going is more important, the people that truly believe so much that they are superior and if you let them they become superior. Breaking the ties that Blind was an emotional journey both both me as an artist portraying it and one person close to me that had experienced the real enactments of manipulation machines.

I guess i created this series to open peoples eyes to the underlying truths that no person can “own” another. Every person has the right to be their own person and make their own choices. Never let another deny you choice. It is an emotional struggle for the victim as she has to rebel against the perspective they are trapping her in to free herself from hopelessness. I want both the character and the person existing in reality to break “the ties that blind”

Another reason was that I really missed drawing. I had been working full time so i had no time to paint or draw, both of which are my passion and I am now turning what I love into a full time career. I spend 3 months solid working on the drawing of this series cross hatching around the clock until it was finished and I had freed the captive. In a way I had also freed myself because I was blissful to have spend my time creating.

In closing I really hope that you like the emotional connection to this piece and the rest of the series. Please take a moment to have a peek at the rest and feel free to pop me a message if you want to know more.

If I was lucky enough to win I would be absolutely thrilled! It would be my first award to go straight on my art CV. It would be a huge boost to me as an artist and if you vote for my artwork then I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I really don’t want to take all the credit for these drawings as I dedicate this work to my fiancĂ© who has became a stronger person with the biggest heart.

Best
