Artwork and story from Jeanne Marston
I have been painting for over 80 years – yes, since I was 6 or 7 years old. I was an orphan and lived in a state run facility. My first and favorite recollection happened one Christmas when we were all given a box of crayons and a coloring book with tracing paper between each page. I was smitten. I spent many quiet hours on my stomach, on the floor, filling every page. Eventually I was placed in a foster home where my new mother was a teacher. I sold my first art work when I was 9 at a street bazaar with her encouragement. Art gave me a secure foundation that was a consistent theme later throughout my life as I was able to travel and live in different states and countries. However, I was unable to pursue art at a specific school to obtain a degree. I took workshops and lessons whenever I could, but missed the basic drawing skills that develops one into a professional artist and opens other doors.
I feel that the Drawing Academy is that fundamental education that I missed many years and miles ago. It is never too late to learn. There are always challenges that come to either inhibit or enhance one’s life. If a door of opportunity is knocking, open it. If you vote for me in this competition, I will be forever grateful. Taking the right step to hone and polish the talent that was given to me at birth, is saying thank you back to the Universe and all the creative energies that guide us.
We have a wren family that returns every year to build a nest. Such a joy to watch the female hopping around to follow her mate as she gives her approval or not for the next nest. Their song is uplifting and entertaining – as I hope this picture is of my art work.
