SURVIVING A FAMOUS NAME

My name was tacked on before Art Carney and that young actor made most strangers make what they think is a witty remark. For more than 20 years my name appeared over articles in newspapers in New Jersey and New York City, Now my name is on my watercolors, an effort I returned to after writing. Actually I began drawing and painting as a grammar-school kid, and continued as a cartoonist in high school and college papers. I began as a cartoonist at my first daily newspaper and switched to writing-editing when I found there was more money there.

Four years ago my late wife suggested that in retirement I return to painting, which I did, taking a couple of courses to relearn the basics of watercolor. Professional artists, resident and visitors are plentiful in my locale–Cape Cod. I realize I will never be a “fine artist,” but it’s been fun entering shows and selling some pieces. I would like to take courses on line, on my schedule.

While painting is the end result, drawing practice is something I try to do on a daily basis. You are never too old to hone your skills. As for my name, I’ve thought of changing it to “Vincent Van Norton.” Doubt, tho, if it would end the witty comments.
