Roossevelt, a Drawing Academy student, created these drawings as part of an anatomy assignment in the course. The purpose of this task was not simply to copy the appearance of the human body, but to understand the structure beneath the surface.

Anatomy for artists is an essential subject for anyone who wants to draw convincing figures and portraits. A figurative artist needs to know how the skeleton is constructed, how muscles attach to the bones, how joints move, and how these structures influence the visible forms of the body.
This knowledge helps artists understand what they see instead of merely reproducing outlines. It also makes it much easier to draw the human figure from memory and imagination, because the artist knows how the body is built and how its forms change in different poses.
By studying anatomy through drawing, students gradually develop a better understanding of proportion, movement, balance, and three-dimensional form. Exercises like these are an important part of academic art training and provide a strong foundation for more advanced portrait and figure drawing.
