Anatomy and Figurative Drawing
Question from Ivaylo
“As a person who has never faced anatomy before, is it possible for me to draw any characters in the future just by watching and following videos in the Drawing Academy courses?”
Dear Ivaylo,
Thank you for your question.
It depends what level of mastery you would like to achieve. The Drawing Academy course will help you with understanding of constructive drawing principles, golden proportions, traditional drawing techniques, proper tonal rendering, rules of composition and so on. Nevertheless, if your goal is to become a figurative artist and be very proficient in drawing realistic human figures and portraits, the knowledge of anatomy for artists is a must.
There is good news though: anatomy for artists is not as complicated as anatomy for medics. You don’t have to learn Latin names of bones and muscles, internal organs, and physiology can be skipped altogether. You don’t even need to know all bones and muscles, only those that influence the body’s appearance. Of course, you need to learn a human body, head and face proportions.
To help art students like you – who want to learn human anatomy quickly and easily – we created the Anatomy Master Class

Hi Ivaylo!
I did the Anatomy Masterclass from these amazing artists and to answer your question further: The classes provide a huge amount of information that you can use in drawing figures and characters that you want, but you need to practice a LOT. Since anatomy in any form, be it human or animal, is a big subject in art you might as well practice a little every day. Take a notebook with you solely for anatomy and draw from imagination or observation by looking at people on the streets or on the bus. If you want to be able to draw characters made by other artist and make fan-art, it is also important to learn the anatomy of that specific figure.
I hope that this answers the rest of your doubts.
Good luck!
Greetings Ivaylo,
Anatomy. It is certainly critical. My professors at an accredited University Art Program never taught anatomy; not certain they even knew anatomy existed or what it was.
