I am a self-taught beginner artist who started this journey in January 2023. Since then, I have focused exclusively on graphite drawing. For me, art is about the challenge of capturing reality with just a pencil and paper. It has become a daily commitment—a way to test my patience and my ability to see the world clearly. Even though learning on my own is difficult, I haven’t given up because I am determined to master the fundamentals of drawing.
My biggest struggle is not having a proper art education to help me see my own mistakes. Often, I finish a drawing and know that something is wrong with the proportions or the feel of it, but I don’t know how to fix it. I’ve tried the Loomis and Reilly methods, but they didn’t click for me. To compensate, I’ve developed my own way of working: I draw light horizontal and vertical lines to measure everything and compare it to my reference. I use a block-in method, but without a teacher, I’m often just guessing and hoping I’m on the right track.
I want to learn the professional foundations of classical drawing. I want to move past my “check-lines” and learn how to block in a subject accurately from the start. I want to understand anatomy, perspective, and advanced shading techniques so I can stop guessing and start drawing with real technical knowledge. I want to build a foundation that will last a lifetime.
I believe the Drawing Academy is the best place for a serious beginner to get a traditional education. It focuses on the time-tested techniques of the Old Masters, which is exactly the kind of structure I’m missing. It’s not just about drawing “something”; it’s about learning the rules of art correctly.
I want to win because I’ve pushed myself as far as I can go on my own. I have the discipline to practice every single day, but I’ve reached a plateau where I need professional guidance to move forward. This course would give me the “eyes” of a teacher and the roadmap I need to transition from a struggling beginner to a skilled artist.
