Artwork and story from Doris Sweeney

I have always sketched, created and have generally been drawn to and inspired by all things creative and artistic. An exceptional art teacher in high school inspired me to try many new mediums and creative avenues. Under her tutelage, I had work shown in local and national competitions, winning several ribbons.

Not seeing a lot of possible career opportunities utilizing art, I proceeded to university in maths, sciences and psychology, leaving formal art instruction in the past.

I proceeded with my career in neuropsychology, assuaging my creative nature with fiber arts, sewing and sketching as time permitted.

Never losing my innate need to create, when my children were both independent and old enough to drive, I resumed my art journey by taking courses with the city.

I have been painting in watercolour and acrylic for about 15 years eventually venturing into competitions and local shows to sell my work. My work is now regularly accepted into juried shows. I’ve won first place in a city art competition and been awarded ‘Special Merrit’ twice. I have sold over 120 paintings, several prints (which I have only just started making) and hundreds of cards (of prints of my work).

The Place of Art in My Life

For me, art, and creativity in general, has been a life-long therapeutic pursuit, helping me to deal with life’s unpredictable vagaries and stresses. I continue to expand and evolve my creativity and artistic accomplishments with countless hours of painting.

I work in both acrylic and watercolour, enjoying the varied intrinsic advantages of both mediums. I have worked diligently to be able to produce acrylics with soft, imperceptible transitions between colours and tones (sfumato). I am now exploring more ink and wash with my watercolour pieces.

I enjoy exploring new styles and subject matter, never feeling the need or desire to paint with just one method or approach.

My Challenges in Art

Every piece presents new challenges. In particular, I struggle with preserving the white in watercolour. I haven’t found a consistent way to accomplish this, particularly with fine lines.

What do I Want to Learn in Art?

I would like to learn all the ways to preserve white when painting watercolour. Additionally, I would like to learn more control over creating soft edges, especially as it would apply to portraiture.

What do I think about Drawing Academy?

I have been receiving emails from Drawing Academy since July 1st. I find them informative and interesting. From what I have read and seen thus far, I think the course material would be beneficial and help me expand my abilities.

Why do I want to win the Drawing Academy course?

As I am still working occasionally, have committed a large portion of my time to being the secretary of my art club, and continue to help care for my adult child who is recovering from a severe traumatic accident, I would prefer to do any course work from home at my own pace but I would like the material to be more in depth than a YouTube tutorial.

Why should people vote for me?

People should vote for me if they see that I have potential and could benefit from further instruction.

Kind Regards,
