Soul’s Flight
Story and artwork from Mary O’Donnell
My name is Mary O’Donnell and I am a special education English teacher. Two years ago, I lost my beloved aunt that was like a mother to me, then I lost vision in my left eye. I was at a loss for what to do in order to move past the hardest time of my life. I thought about my aunt who loved to paint, and in her memory, I began to paint and draw in order to strengthen my remaining eye. I fell in love with art, and have been teaching myself how to draw and paint ever since. It has been such a fun journey, but there are challenges when trying to teach myself drawing.
The challenges I face in my art is that I need to learn about perspective, shading, and color theory to make more realistic drawings, and to improve my overall drawing skills. Another challenge I face is not having anyone who is more knowledgeable about drawing to give me feedback about my work in order to help me improve. That’s when I looked for online art classes and found Drawing Academy.
When I looked into Drawing Academy I was impressed with the level of involvement the professors took in their student’s development. The feedback I saw given was informative and uplifting and I knew I had come to the right place. I believe Drawing Academy would help me with my goals of becoming a stronger artist and take my art to the next level. Because of the support with constructive feedback on student’s work, and the ability to watch their lessons as many times as needed to master the techniques. Both the constructive feedback and quality lessons available at any time would tremendously benefit my art practice which is also a reason I want to win.
I also want to win because I want to make my aunt proud and become the best artist I can be. She would want that for me, just as much as I want it for myself. I want to win to show people that just because terrible loss occurs, loss of an eye, and my aunt, doesn’t mean the journey is over. Another reason I want to win is that I am on a teacher’s salary and won’t have the money to put towards the course otherwise. Thank you for your time and consideration and good luck to all the talented contestants!
