Drawing in silverpoint
Silverpoint Continued: Taking on the Old Masters!
Artwork by Carl S., Drawing Academy student
So after my last critique, I decided to take on another silverpoint drawing. I know that I have to start drawing from life and I do and will continue to, I still like drawing the Old Masters.
Here I take on the Madonna of the Yarnwinder by Leonardo. Although there is some argument that the painting was finished by assistants Sodoma or Salai. Anyway, here it is in silverpoint.
This drawing was fun to do, but it is light on anatomy. I have been doing more study of human anatomy. In my last critique, the neck was unconvincing and after looking at a number of examples of anatomical drawings and pictures I see my mistake. I missed the sternocleidomastoid muscle that is prominent when a woman’s neck is turned. Thanks Vladimir.
This drawing was used to practice silverpoint and tonal value. It is not finished. I stopped it because I wanted some critique. Overall it looks ok, but I believe it is time to start drawing portraits from life.
I hope you like it.
