Young Coal Miner
By Richard Cheng
I started drawing and painting after I retired from my day job.
After spending time and money on three courses at drawing at an university extra-mural program, I felt that I have not benefited as much as I deserved – and I have to make a decision. Either I give up drawing altogether, and look for something else to pass my time, or I should forget about learning from these paid teachers and do it on my own.
As a result of deciding on self teaching, I purposely chose to learn human portraiture, simply because that I think that that genre of drawing would be the most challenging. I would cut photographs from newspapers and magazines (or any other sources), 5 to 10 pictures a day, and just doodled and copied studiously for a year and a half.
I think I have got a lot of things right. But I also know that I got a lot things wrong. And I also know that there must be a lot about drawing portraits that I do not even know.
I would like to learn how to draw in a classical way.
