Artworks by Alex Brown, Drawing Academy student
Hello,
My name is Alex Brown and I would like to share here my artworks before and after the Drawing Academy course.
My artworks before Drawing Academy:
My drawings after the Drawing Academy course:
This is my very first sketch in silver-point:
My life drawing exercises:
Portrait drawings from imagination:
I did these portraits after reading the book by Vladimir London How to Draw a Portrait: The step-by-step guide on how to draw portraits in the three-quarters view
It is the must-have book for anyone who is interested in drawing portraits.
I’m very happy with my progress after the Drawing Academy course.
Thank you, Vladimir and Natalie!

Hi Alex, thank you for sharing your artworks. I am very impressed with your silverpoint piece, can you tell what ground did you use? I’m trying to draw in silver, but my lines are so faint
Susan, thanks for asking, it’s actually sandstone paper without any ground. It is made of mineral and works like sandpaper, so silver-point leaves bold marks with ease. I bought it in a local art store, but you may find some suppliers online : )
im also using sandstone paper, the only thing it bubbles when pressing too hard
I like these watercolors! For me it is so hard to control flowing paints. I paint in acrylic – it dries fast, but I cannot make it look airy and ‘fresh’
Thank you, John. I do appreciate your feedback
wow! beautiful portraits! is it red pencil or chalk?
Thank you, I like them as well : ) I’m using “Pitt Oil Base” by Faber Castell and “Luminance 6901” by Caran d’Ache pencils. They are quite waxy and difficult to erase, but do not smudge easily as sanguine does
Alex,
Thank you for your kind words about my book and the drawing course; your feedback means a lot to us. I am very impressed with your artworks, great job!
I especially like how thorough your figure and portrait drawings are – you applied your knowledge of proportions and anatomy well.
There are few details you may double check, making sure that both eyes have the same size, relative head-to-shoulders proportion in the first portrait, symmetry of the upper lip in the second portrait, slight misplacement of the model’s right sternocleidomastoid muscle in the first portrait, and the elbow anatomy of the model’s left arm in the second life-drawing.
All these points are very minor and do not spoil the overall look of your artworks. I’m sure many viewers would not even notice them.
Also, as a fine artist, you have a “license” to bend the anatomy and proportions rules if you do it on purpose to achieve your creative task.
Once again, thank you so much for sharing your wonderful artworks! It’s a pleasure to have such students as you.
I wish you all creative success you deserve,
Vladimir London
Drawing Academy tutor
Vladimir, the pleasure is mine! It is an honour to be your student. I can’t thank you enough for all support you gave me, for all emails you answered, for all artwork critiques you did. I feel that I’m making a great progress, which would not be possible without your help. Thank you so much!
WOW! I can see Beautiful progress in your work.
Alex. I beg your pardon for this but I am confused. I cannot see the relative relationship between the before work and the after work. Would you be so kind as to help me see what you are comparing here with the landscapes to the figure drawings? I would appreciate any information you would be willing to share regarding this. Thanks.
Tom, thanks for asking. I had decent drawing skills, but specialised mainly in landscapes. The reason I took this drawing course is to learn portrait and figure drawing. I’m glad I did : )
