Do you need photos to study drawing?
Question from Elmar, Drawing Academy student
Hello. I was pretty convinced that I would definitely receive some high-quality educational materials in the Drawing Academy. And I wasn’t mistaken!
However, as I continue to advance with the lessons, I can’t help but notice that some of your videos lack photographs of the objects that a learner is supposed to draw. Can you please clarify how to study in the Drawing Academy course?
Thank you in advance,
Elmar
Dear Elmar,
Many thanks for your question.
There are two directions artists take these days – those who copy from photos and those who can draw from life and imagination.
I want you to become a real artist, not a reproducer. I want you to be able to draw whatever you see, think or imagine.
This is the main aim of the Drawing Academy course – to give you the necessary knowledge of how to draw what you know, not to copy what you see.
If your goal is to learn how to make a carbon copy of a photo, then you’d fail from the start – photo equipment would do a better job than you.
However, if you understand that the most valuable thing you can give as an artist is to be original and creative, to be able to express what you think and tell your story through the visual language of drawing, then you would agree that making a copy of a photo is not “real art”; it is a hand-made reproduction.
You do not need photos to learn the most important principles of constructive drawing, linear and aerial perspective, rules of tonal rendering, rules of composition, golden proportions and so on.
I do not want you to copy photographs nor pictures you see in video lessons of the Drawing Academy course. This is the wrong way to learn drawing.
What you need is to observe the principles used in video lessons, grasp the main rules of constructive drawing, understand how this works and apply those principles and rules in your own creative works of art.
