Hi Edward,

Many thanks for your self-portrait. It is very good, well done.

You have a good eye for proportions and I’m sure you managed to capture likeness as well.

When you you do backgrounds, you may consider various hatching patterns.

Please see below some examples of how other students render backgrounds.

Best regards,
Vladimir

  1. I like your drawing. It is quite good! But I would like to see you experiment with different numbers pencils. Get into the hair. Showing the shape of the curls and highlights. Showing highlights contrast middle tones and dark’s. The other pictures are also lovely long term drawings using highlights, midtones and dark’s. I believe some use charcoal. You could also show different tones in skin tone. You could take a black and white photo of your skin in pose you draw with same lighting. This will help you to see light and dark, shadows and tone. Training your eyes making them more critical. Also another technique is to erase some lines that are not essential. This technique would work wonderfully with your drawing. I love the details in you ears. You don’t really need the line for shoulder. Later love your work! Bye.
