Seeing values is something you develop with practice.

In the beginning, you can do the following trick: squint your eyes almost shut, so you see less color, and it becomes almost grayscale. This makes it easier to distinguish tonal values.
When you draw, you do not isolate value; you compare it to other values. This method is described in detail in multiple video lessons of the drawing course.
