How to tell if objects are intersecting in drawing

Question from Haidi, Drawing Academy student

Hi,

I love Drawing Academy lessons. You advised to use constructive drawing principles and drawing objects as transparent wireframes, but how can I tell if my objects are intersecting?

Here is my sketch.

Maybe two vases on the left are intersecting. How can I really tell?

Thank you so much
Haidi

Dear Haidi,

Thank you very much for your drawing and question. You did a good job on using axes of symmetry and drawing vases as if they are transparent, well done.

The way to check if vases are intersecting is to project their diameters on the ground.

You can see that the left vase touches the central one, while the third vase is free-standing.

Here’s a quick sketch I did earlier this year to illustrate this principle of constructive drawing:

I hope this helps.
