Mechanical vs. wooden case pencils

Mechanical vs. wooden case pencils

Question from Alex, Drawing Academy student

Is it best to use the traditional pencils mentioned in video 1 of month one, or can we use a lead holder? I often use the Staedtler Mars 2.0 mm pencil for my drawings.

The lead for the pencil can be changed. For example, you can use 2B, HB, 6B and the other traditional hard and soft leads.

Hi Alex,

Many thanks for your question.

It is a personal preference.

I like the natural feel of the wooden pencil case and the fact that I have to sharpen it with a knife. This gives something “authentic” and “real”. Such feeling subconsciously reflects on the quality of an artwork.

Mechanical vs. wooden case pencils

Mechanical pencil will deliver exactly the same mark and for that reason is totally suitable for drawing.

Kind regards,
Vladimir

I like the woodless pencil best cause you don’t have to sharpen hem. If they get dull, I can sharpen hem on sandpaper or a nail file.
